報告摘要:

Can the abundantly available solar energy be tapped sustainably to meet our clean energy and clean water demands with no burden on the environment? Exploring bioinspired artificial and semi-artificial materials could hold the key. Our energy use and water use are intricately intertwined and we must of cognizant of the water footprint of energy technologies as well as the energy requirement of water technologies. Developing materials technologies for achieving sustainability in Water-Energy Nexus is therefore an important area of research. One emerging broad concept toward this goal is the idea of “Solar-to-X”. While Power-to-X is already a popular term referring to the use of electric power (ideally renewable power) for a wide range of applications like Power-to-Hydrogen, Power-to-Ammonia, Power-to-Gas, Power-to-Heat, etc. “Solar-to-X” is an emerging term that refers to a broad umbrella of technologies that capture solar energy for a wide range of applications besides electricity generation. While Solar-to-X includes both mature and niche concepts, in my talk I will touch on some of the emerging technologies/concepts like Solar Bioelectricity, Solar Biocapacitors, Solar Fuels, Solar Desalination, Solar Humidity Harvesting, particularly from an applied materials science perspective while also highlighting my past and ongoing works in these areas.

報告人簡介:

Sai Kishore Ravi is an Assistant Professor at the School of Energy and Environment, City University of Hong Kong. He earned his PhD in 2018 from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS), working on biohybrid photoelectrochemical cells, bio-capacitors and tactile sensors integrating photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes. After graduation, he continued at NUS as a post-doctoral researcher, working on work-function manipulation of Schottky electrodes and their application in semi-artificial photosynthesis. His research interests also include studying biogenic/nano materials for water desalination and atmospheric water harvesting. Prior to his doctoral work, Sai received his Bachelors in Materials Science & Engineering from the College of Engineering Guindy (CEG), India. He has been the recipient of several awards including the ‘Prestigious Engineering Achievement Award 2018’ awarded by The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) under the category of Applied Research and Development, NUS’s Annual Best Publication Awards in Material Science for the years 2016, 2017 and 2018, and the Anna University Gold Medal for Materials Science & Engineering. Sai has also served as an Associate Editor for reputed journals like Advanced Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Advanced Materials Technologies, Advanced Energy & Sustainability Research, and Energy Technology at Wiley VCH, Germany. He was recently appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Energy Technology.
